Radyn shook his head. “It wasn’t a lie. There was only confusion over the generation count, because of the Great Cataclysm. You knew that—that’s why you left me that ancient ledger.”

“I am not talking about the generation count.” Mordelan sat back and fixed his blue eyes on Radyn. “We are all victims of the Azurine Prophecy. You, me, Nejla, our whole family. All the way back to Udas Kade. We have been used by the one who calls herself the Goddess. She has manipulated our lives as if we were her playthings.”

“Lathena?” Radyn’s eyebrows lifted. “All she has ever done is guide me, protect me. She helped me develop my powers.”

“And do you think that power was hers to give? Some special grace from the Realm of Light? Lathena fooled you into believing your abilities were a gift from her. It’s just another way she has manipulated you.”

“That doesn’t make sense,” Radyn said. “Why would Lathena want to use me? I was nothing before I met her, only a carnival tumbler.”

“You were a descendant of Udas Kade, born into the greatest family of magi to have ever lived.” Mordelan gestured to the shelves that lined the walls. “Look at these books around you. I have over a dozen chambers, filled with as many tomes. Not all of them came from Udas’ temple. Some did not even come from this world.”

Radyn’s eyes widened. He remembered what Breeg had said about escaping Oberyon. “Are you saying these books came from other worlds?” he asked. “You have the power to leave Oberyon?”

“There are paths,” Mordelan said carefully, “for those who know where to look for them. How do you think all of your gods fled the planet? But what is important is—” He stopped and raked his fingers through his long hair. “I can see that this is confusing. Perhaps I am to blame for jumping ahead. Why don’t you let me start at the beginning?”

He drew a deep breath, his gaze drifting to one of the slender windows. “I was once like you, raised to believe that I had been chosen—that I was the Azurine, and that somehow made me special. But as I grew older, I became suspicious. As hard as I worked, it became apparent there was nothing special about me. Not innately.”

“That’s not what I heard,” Radyn said. “Everyone who has met you, described you as the most powerful mage that ever lived. They said that you knew it too.”

Mordelan smiled and dipped his head. “I didn’t say that I wasn’t great—I said that I wasn’t special. What I achieved, I achieved through my own efforts, not from some divine gift from the Realm of Light. That belief was bolstered when I learned even a man as weak as Andal Tavian could channel energy.”

“That was when you figured out you weren’t the Azurine.”

“That was when I suspected,” Mordelan said. “Something about the prophecy wasn’t right. I became obsessed with learning the truth. I knew that if I was going to find the answers, it would begin with Udas.
